Print only some pages

Print a page range, the current page, odd or even pages, or just a rectangular part of a page, from the print dialog or the command line.

Press Ctrl + P and type the pages under Page Range, e.g. 1-3, 8. At a glance:

Page range: in the print dialog, Ctrl + P.
Current page: in the print dialog.
Odd / even pages: the dialog’s Advanced tab, or odd / even on the command line.
Part of a page: Print Selection… (CmdPrintSelection) after Ctrl + drag.
Command line: SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "1-3,8" file.pdf

Print a page range #

Open the print dialog: Ctrl + P, File → Print…, the toolbar’s print button, or Ctrl + K, then Print Document... in Command Palette.
Under Page Range choose Pages and type the pages: single pages and ranges separated by commas, e.g. 1-3, 8, 10-12. You can give up to 10 ranges.
Click Print.

Page numbers are physical pages: 1 is the first page of the file, whatever number is printed on it.

On Windows 11 the new print dialog has the same choice under Pages (custom range).

Print the current page #

Press Ctrl + P and choose Current Page under Page Range. The page you are looking at is printed.

In the Windows 11 dialog, choose the current page under Pages, or type its number as a custom range.

Print odd or even pages #

In the print dialog’s Advanced tab (next to General), choose Odd pages only or Even pages only. It applies to the page range you picked, so you can print the odd pages of 1-20 only.

Use it for manual two-sided printing: print the odd pages, turn the stack over, put it back, print the even pages.

The Windows 11 dialog doesn’t have these options. Use the command line or restore the classic dialog.

Print part of a page #

Hold Ctrl and drag with the left mouse button to select a rectangle on the page.
Start Print Selection… (CmdPrintSelection):
- Right-click → Selection → Print Selection…
- Ctrl + K, then Print Selection... in Command Palette
- or press Ctrl + P and choose Selection under Page Range
The print dialog opens with Selection already chosen. Click Print.

Print Selection… is new in pre-release 3.7; choosing Selection in the dialog works in older versions too. To print the area at its real size instead of fitting the paper, see Print part of a page.

Note: a text selection can’t be printed on its own; only a rectangle.

Print pages from the command line #

Put the pages in -print-settings, with -print-to "<printer>" or -print-to-default. Nothing is shown and SumatraPDF exits when done.

Pages 1 to 3 and 8:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "1-3,8" report.pdf

Only page 5, to a named printer:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-to "Office Printer" -print-settings "5" report.pdf

The last page, or the last 3 pages:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "last" report.pdf
SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "-3--1" report.pdf

Odd pages of pages 1 to 20, then the even ones:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "1-20,odd" report.pdf
SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "1-20,even" report.pdf

Pages 10 to 8 in reverse order, fitted to the paper:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-to-default -print-settings "10-8,fit" report.pdf

Page tokens mix freely with the other options (fit, 2x, duplex, …). The full list is in -print-settings options.

To pick the pages in the dialog instead, use -print-dialog:

SumatraPDF.exe -print-dialog report.pdf

Tips #

Use Split a PDF or Extract Pages From PDF (right-click → Document) when you need the pages as a file rather than on paper.
Use -print-settings in a script or a shortcut for a range you print often.
Use Current Page with Ctrl + G (Go to Page) to print one page of a long document quickly.
