See PDF info: pages, page size, fonts, security

See a PDF’s title, author, page count, page size, fonts, encryption and permissions in SumatraPDF with Document Properties and Show PDF Info, or from the command line with sumatrapdf-tool info and pages.

Show PDF Info and the command-line tools are available in pre-release 3.7

Press Ctrl + D for Document Properties. At a glance:

Document Properties: Ctrl + D. Metadata, PDF version, page count, size of the current page, permissions, encryption, signatures and fonts, in plain words.
Show PDF Info: the same report as sumatrapdf-tool info: metadata, encryption, page sizes, fonts and images, with PDF object numbers.
sumatrapdf-tool info: that report in a terminal, with options to show only fonts, images or page sizes.
sumatrapdf-tool pages: the size boxes and rotation of every page.

Open it in any of these ways:

File → Properties
Ctrl + D
Right-click the document → Document → Properties
Right-click the tab → Properties…
Ctrl + K, then Document Properties... in Command Palette (CmdProperties)

For a PDF it shows, when the file has them:

File, File Size, File Type
Title, Subject, Author, Copyright, Keywords
Created, Modified
Application (the program that made the document) and PDF Producer (the program that made the PDF)
PDF Version
Denied Permissions: printing document, copying text
Encryption, e.g. Standard V5 R6 256-bit AES
Signatures: digital signatures and whether they are valid (see Sign a PDF)
Fast Web View and PDF Optimizations (Tagged PDF, PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF/E)
Number of Pages
Current Page (N) Size: in cm, mm, inches and points, with the paper name, e.g. (A4) or (Letter). Your locale’s unit comes first.
Fonts: every font, with its type, encoding and whether it is embedded, e.g. Georgia (TrueType; Ansi; embedded). The list appears a moment after the window opens.

Click Copy To Clipboard to copy all of it as text. Press Esc to close the window.

Document Properties also works for other formats (EPUB, comics, images…), with the fields that format has. For images it shows the size, DPI and camera (EXIF) details.

Right-click the document → Document → Show PDF Info
Ctrl + K, then Show PDF Info... in Command Palette (CmdPdShowInfo)

It’s only shown for PDF files. It opens a PDF Info window with the same text that sumatrapdf-tool info file.pdf prints (see below). Use it when you need object numbers, for example to extract a font or an image.

PDF-1.7 is the PDF version.
Info object has the metadata: title, author, creator, producer and dates (D:20260217025405-08'00' is 2026-02-17 02:54:05, UTC-8).
Pages: is the page count.
Mediaboxes lists each different page size once, in points (¹⁄₇₂ inch): [ 0 0 595 842 ] is 595 x 842 pt, which is A4 (210 x 297 mm). 612 x 792 is US Letter.
Fonts and Images list the resources used on each page. The number in brackets at the end is the object number.
Not a ZUGFeRD file. means the PDF has no embedded electronic invoice.

Show only some of it:

-F fonts, -I images, -M page sizes (media boxes)
-P patterns, -S shadings, -X form XObjects
a page list at the end, e.g. sumatrapdf-tool info -F report.pdf 2-3

See if a PDF is encrypted #

An encrypted PDF has an Encryption object in the info output:

/Length 256 with AESV3 is 256-bit AES; AESV2 is AES-128.
/P holds the permission flags; Denied Permissions in Document Properties shows the ones that matter for reading (printing, copying text).

If the PDF needs a password to open, info fails with argument error: cannot authenticate password. Add the password with -p:

See the size of every page #

info lists each page size once. To see every page, with rotation and all size boxes, use pages:

Sizes are in points (¹⁄₇₂ inch): width is r - l, height is t - b.
Rotate v="90" means the page is shown turned 90 degrees, so this Letter page is displayed in landscape.
A page with a CropBox (visible area), TrimBox, BleedBox or ArtBox lists those too. See sumatrapdf-tool pages.
Add a page list to see some pages only: sumatrapdf-tool pages mixed.pdf 2.

Tips #

Use Copy To Clipboard in Document Properties to paste the details into a bug report or an email.
Use sumatrapdf-tool pages to find pages of a different size before printing (see Printing).

Use sumatrapdf-tool info on a file that won’t open elsewhere; warnings about a broken xref mean it needs repair.
